My girlfriend Ania (who some of you will have met at UDS) has just come down from the Uhuru peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro (the highest point in Africa at 5895m elevation). I’m very impressed considering they had five days of heavy rain and freezing temperatures near the top. She claims to have been photographed at the summit wearing an Ubuntu T-shirt (on top of her fleece). I don’t actually have any photographic evidence of this yet because the internet connection where they are makes sending the picture impractical … I’ll post again when I get it.
At least that one should be a digital image, taken by Ania’s friend Beata, so it can be emailed given the bandwidth. Ania’s own pictures on the other hand are taken with an old Nikon film camera that I bought on ebay for £12
I’m quite sure the results will be excellent – at ISO 1-200 in daylight film is still very competitive. As always, having a good lens and a good eye is more important than the camera. Of course digital is more practical – except when you’re on a mountain top where you cannot charge your batteries or upload your files anyway. Add to that the risk of damaging an expensive digital camera up there, and the choice of film becomes obvious
But most importantly she’s on holiday, which also means taking a break from the digital workflow of her studio work.
No this isn’t a post about a netbook running Ubuntu on Kilimanjaro, that would be pointless … but I’m sure the Ubuntu spirit of collaboration was essential in getting to the top in those conditions
